Base paper and printed decal paper
Base paper is the unprinted material. Printed decal paper carries the decorative design. A purchasing brief should state which stage is required and whether treatment, cutting or other finishing is included.
Names you may encounter
Suppliers may use terms such as melamine decal base paper, melamine overlay paper or decalcomania paper. Do not rely on the product name alone: confirm that the proposed grade is intended for your tableware process.
Evaluate the complete process
Review the proposed paper specification with your printing and production teams. Ask for data relevant to handling, absorption, strength and print performance, then validate the paper under your actual production conditions.
A useful sample record
- Paper grade, dimensions and batch reference
- Artwork version, printing method and color reference
- Treatment and molding conditions used in the trial
- Appearance, adhesion and any other agreed acceptance checks
- Date, result and the person responsible for approval
A substrate claim alone does not establish the suitability of the finished tableware. Assess the complete finished product against the requirements of its intended market and use.
